Our Common Arizona Border with Mexico - Safe ???
About sixty miles north of that line, up here in the US of A there is a place called Crystal Canyon. Many of the locals in Tucson used to love to take the kids, wife, lunch, dogs n such down in the truck in the early Spring mornings and recreate.
In the good old days. That is in Santa Cruz County, Sheriff Tony Estrada, I believe is in charge. Sixty miles NORTH of that border. The next county north is us, Pima. That's where you find Tucson, an hour and a half drive from Mexico.
Now it's got big signs from the state office that says, (roughly) be careful in here, drug traffickers, armed, from Mexico, illegal aliens, armed, travel through this region. travel at your own risk.
In MY country. I used to take my small daughters down there from Tucson and cook breakfast and let them play out in the trees and desert as the sun came up. Now, ....illegal aliens with, "AK 47s" as the local law says. And we are not the only state with troubles surrounding Mexican drug cartels.
Recently, a handful of Oregon National Guard troops, trooped into our B-17 Museum, in fatigues, mind you, and we launched into conversations all things re: B-17s, the desert southwest, the eastern Oregon desert, and whadda ya know, Mexican drug cartels carting guns and drugs in their neck of the woods, too.
Comes now (as the lawyers say) the Oregon Guard who tell me the boys below the Arizona border are up in THEIR country carting drugs around, armed to the teeth with machine guns NOS (not otherwise specified) and the Guard is NOT allowed to carry ANYTHING other than PISTOLS.
Uh huh. Sound familiar? I have a Mexican/Indian friend who works on an Indian reservation in Oregon who independently confirms to me what the Guard guys tell me.
WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE BORDER.
