Tonight's broadcast of CNN - Consumer News
When is a sale - A SALE??
Chriastmas time, retailers are advertising up to 60% off, the news broadcaster queries, 60% off WHAT? Good question, says I. thirty years ago I was the general manager of the 7 th largest mall on the globe here in Tuc - son and witnessed some of the biggest hi-jinks known to humanity.
The "big sale" was coming: 30% off!! (trumpets sounding, nikked girls running around wiff banners flyin') you get the idea, drums banging - BIG sale. Two or three days before, store department heads are busy jacking up prices on big ticket items. Day before the big hootenanny, the "troops" are urunning around stickering everything with 30% off tags.
Sucker bets - works every time.
TODAY, my wife and I are out at an antique shop on Speedway Boulevard in Tucson. The ad in the local rag said 50% off everything! When we get there, it's 50% off everything NOT marked, "FIRM." Hmmmm.
Twenty minutes in the store and Sandi, my wife says, Geez, the prices are outta site. At 50% off. Now I'm day dreaming about my days running the huge mall here 30 years ago. AHA, says I we're back at it again, only this time, in the middle of a humongous recession.
Tonight over burgers and Coke, Fox news says, the FEDS are investigating retails for phony ads nationwide advertising "big sales 60-65% off" and guess what?
" S'not true," they're lying. ...... who? Retailers? In the middle of a 10% unemployment recession. No jobs, Christmas season, North Korea looking down our throats, and the boys headed back to Afghanistan? Target and Home Depot cheating us? .... US?
Hopey, Changey. We gotta believe.
