Piers Morgan and Our Rights to Fire Arms
As I get older, I seem to get smarter, at least my grandfather told me that. It is my opinion, at 72, that the old man was right. I catch more things now as I slow down, and slow the world around me down, that I never did when I was younger.
Like Piers Morgan, NBC talk TV host, Irish born television personality recently in America, a jolly fellow, until recently, now developing prickly edges on social issues with his guests. Seems he doesn't like the idea of Americans having "250 million guns. "
Most recently while guesting himself on Jay Leno's Late Show, while himself swallowing his favorite Irish beer, Dark Guinness (from my own experience while I lived there the consistency of motor oil and the kick of a mule), Mr. Morgan pontificated his distaste for American handguns as "Insane."
"Why, what do we have here, 250 million guns? That's insane. In my country, we would never put up with it," he stated.
He's right. Ireland hated England during WWII and there were active efforts to aide the Germans against the English, especially in the south, in the town of Cork where German U Boats docked and drank in Irish pubs, frequently fighting with American sub crews.
Then there is the Irish history involving the gun-loving factions of the I.R.A and frequent gun-battles with the English Army in the north of Ireland during the 70's. Relations between the Irish in the north and the rest of the protestant inhabitants are still a bit rocky.
Guns in Ireland are still to be found, and I suppose that the Mr. Morgan's feet held tightly to the fire will disclose where we can find serious cache's of buried IRA weapons around say Howth, an old IRA hangout west of Dublin out on the ocean, or Dingle Bay where they filmed Ryan's Daughter.
The Irish....dislike of guns? Perish the thought. How about the insurrection in the Post Office on O'Connell Street Mr. Morgan that started the whole " troubles?"
I met Eamon Devalera, the old man, when he was very, very old and I was very young, working for the former Irish Airlines. Pleasure was all mine. I wonder what he would have thought, about P9iers Morgan moving to America trying to transplant his "Irish morals " on America.
Let's invite Piers on a return to his peaceful Ireland where he can live quietly amidst his Irish brethern where gun violence is almost unheard of and he can spend the rest of his life in peace and tranquility. Because Piers, babe, you sure don't understand this culture.
