Gun Control
I met a family from Egypt two days ago. We spoke at length of the recent 'troubles" going on in Cairo's much rioted square. The father told me of his worry about his two sons and their disobedience - going down and joining the riots.
He tells me that Mubarek's men, his infrastructure is still in place. Same problem, different face in place. The killing goes on. His sons, standing beside him, are as American in nature as our own, the smile, giggle and ignore him. One wears a NY jets T-shirt. The father sheds a tear.
I ask, do the civilians have access to guns? No, he tells me, it is against the law. No one is allowed, of course, the government is free to shoot to kill anyone who defies them.
Ah, gun control. It works in Egypt, Iran, the Phillipines during the Marcos regime, when he confiscates all the guns, then, panicked when he saw the public had more fire power than his own army.
Then, the killing began in real earnest.
Now, our own government begins a quiet, creaping program of slowly circling the wagons around our citizens. Who has guns, ammo, what kind do we buy, when, how much? Paperwork, ah yes. No harm done, just fill out these forms. We have to keep track, files, you know. Just keeping track of the firearms.
Slippery slope, the lawyers call it. The National Rifle Association spends far too much of their money fighting intrusive government activity like this. Way too much, and, in my opinion, the current government spends too much time on control of guns when they should spend more time on our economy. National crime statistics have been falling in all major crimes anyway.
My own theory is - most of us carry guns and the bad guys know it, as TV personality Bill O'Reilly commented recently.
