The Movie Theatre Shooter & Gun Control

A few points:
  • " This isn't about GUNS, it's about Mental Health of young men around the ages of twenty to twenty five. We should NOT be talking about guns, we should be talking about how to screen for mental problems of these young men who have these impending mental signs." Dr. Keith Ablow, Psychiatrist, Fox News Contributor Monday 7/23/12 on the subject of the Aurora Cinema shooter.
  • A recent independent non-partisan study shows the states with the most lenient gun laws have less gun crimes. States with the most strict gun laws have the most problems with gun violence such as New York, Illinois and California. Arizona, which liberalized gun laws two years ago to a point where any felon-free citizen may carry a handgun open or hidden without a permit or license, has seen a drop in violent crime.
  • Most of the guns used in domestic mass killings have been purchased legally, although, in Aurora, the suspect was denied gun-club membership by the owner because of "bizarre behavior."
  • In America, women now outnumber men as the largest market for new handgun purchases.
  • In the case of January 8 shooting in Tucson, Arizona, over 200 private citizens were in attendence when the shooter opened fire. Although legally permissable, not one person chose to be armed.
  • Not even the local police could get to the shooter in time to stop him.
  • In Aurora, local police were on the scene in 90 seconds, and even though his automatic rifle jammed, not enough time to stop his continued killng.
  • Colorado gun laws are more strict requiring registration and licensing. No one in the crowd of 300 brought a handgun. They were defenseless.
  • Clearly, we have to do something about guns, BUT WHAT?
My conclusion I bring to the table is simple: the handguns are in the wrong hands: the whackos, the crazies, the criminals, those who will never bother to obey the laws.

We do. The mass of civilize, caring people who flock to each memorial, to each forest of flowers, the vigils, each of us, crying and weaping for the lost children, the mothers, the young men, lost forever because some "Joker"-wannabe runs off his rails and wants to take half a city with him.

What happens if the next time its an Queda attack?

To each citizen, free of a felony conviction, living a lawful life, American, in good standing within his community, I say, arm yourself. The local police have every good intention and are our friends. I see our role as an armed public only as a support to an overworked, beleagued underpaid, undersupported Police Force. We have to look out for ourselves until the Police arrive.

The guns are in the wrong hands. Take them out of the hands of the mentally deranged, and into ours. We need the ability to obviously defend ourselves. If you lack the will to do so, alright , but please do not stand in the way of others who plead for the right of self-determination and the right of survival.
