Tucson, Arizona - The economics of living here
Unless you are reasonable wealthy, (well-off is a subjective term,
I know), retired with a solid income that is well protected ( and I mean by that NOT guaranteed by any of the pistoleros on Wall Street), I would NOT advise you to move to Tucson.
I first moved from south Philadephia in the mid 70's, during what would later be termed the largest mass migration of humanity in the history of the planet. We moved out of the rust belt to the Sun Belt "for a better lifel."
Yeah, well, I did get all that: better salaries, better jobs, more opportunity. In the 70's, salary levels in Tucson were in the 30's to 40's if you were lucky. Living was cheap. Houses were in the 40's. The GI bill (USAF) got my family into a great house for $500, great neighborhood, walk to good schools.
We originally left Delaware because of forced busing. Cured that problem here.
The local government here has wobbled between liberal Democratic and socialist, occasionally electing former Communist sympathizers into City Council positions. My education has been conservation, pro business. Never, since my arrival here, has elected officials in this area been supportive of low taxes, or a positive influence on increasing a business base to support a thriving economy.
Even the county government at times has elected Political Science professors and environmentalists to supervisory positions, giving Tucson a profile akin to Boulder, Colorado, only without the money and attitude.
Now, during the 21st century, comes Tucson and it's Democratic, pseudo socialst governmental atmosphere - still - and this town, this county has been named, nationally, the sixth poorest community in the United States of America.
So, to all Americans seeking a better life and are looking to southern Arizona, my advice, you'd better bring a lot of money. Be prepared to support yourself. We have streets with cracks & holes and police who are late in answering calls, poor people lining up everywhere looking for help, illegal aliens still crossing the border unchecked seeking the great handout - and there is none.
My advice to you all - do your homework.
And this is part of it.
