Sports Heros ...Satche Pgaie, Connie Mack, Babe Ruth

satchme naive, but I remember the days when Connie Mack, Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, Tommy Robertson and the like rounded their own bases signed autographs, thrilled kids, sent junior leagues back to sand lots with big dream of a vast new world of stardom in "The Big Leagues."
No More, as I see it.
If stardom is to be had in the minds and hearts of impressionable hero worshiping young kids, it will have to be in the retail shops of the endorsements of their favorite athletes' shirts, shoes,or jogging shorts, all over priced built in royalties for all upstairs marketing levels.\
Meanwhile today's millionaire sports figures, far cry from the scrap n tumble hotel to hotel, city to city vagabonds of yesterday, are more concerned with their next contract extension, signing bonuses, girlfriend whereabouts and God knows what else.
I overheard a television broadcast by a sports announcer in a locker room regarding drug usage by athletes during game days. One athlete in the locker room on camera said blithely " well almost everybody does it, what do you want me to say? - don't use it and go out there and suck?"
I say, so much for the national past time. IF WE NOW KNOW EVERYBODY IS JUICED WITH ILLEGAL DRUGS, THE OUTCOMES ARE FIXED. WHY WATCH THE DAMN STUFF ON TV
     WHAT would Babe Ruth say?
